Rovdyrsenter in Østerdalen offers digital nature communication

-Nature is open all the time and when we wanted to create an offer that is always open, it was very appropriate to do it out in nature, on well-established hiking trails. There is a lot of beauty in the forest that is easy to walk past, now visitors can stop and learn more along the way, says Runhild Dammen, general manager of the predator visitor center in Stor-elvdal municipality. The visitor center uses the app Voice Of Norway both in teaching and as an offer to visitors.

Digital nature communication

– So far we have only created the trail “Eventyrskogen langs Glomma”, but shows the potential to expand the offer in the entire region where we work with predator communication, especially as digital guides do not leave any physical traces in nature. Østerdalen predator visitor center covers eleven municipalities in Østerdalen, but we have started on our home turf in Koppang. The digital guides supplement the physical signage and experiences outside, says Dammen.

Predator center with outdoor school

– We are a predator center with a focus on the large predators brown bear, wolf, lynx and wolverine, but in the guides we create we also tell about the habitats in the soil, the tree and the river. It is important to communicate about the habitats of the species, and to try to communicate the complicated interaction in nature, says Dammen, who is passionate about getting children outside and offering something different.

– It is very exciting to communicate out in nature, and it is easier to understand when you can sense what is being communicated. When we talk about the red forest ant right by the anthill, it gives a little more than if the children hear the audio story at the school desk. The pictures in the guide also supplement well what we tell about, she smiles.

This is how the digital guide works

– The guide itself is in the Voice Of Norway app, and it is available free of charge for all smartphones. The content we have created is located at locations on the trail and starts automatically in the smartphone when the students are at the right place on the map. The digital guide supplements what the students already see on the spot, she says, adding that the route can be downloaded in advance so that the students do not have to use mobile data.

There are many beautiful things in the forest,
which is easy to pass by

Predator Center

– There are 4 authorized predator centers in Norway and we are in the 3rd. operating year now. We are a traveling visitor center and are a resource for all the 11 municipalities in Østerdalen. 1. On November this year, we will also open a new exhibition at Koppang, where the theme is “The 4 big + golden eagles”, concludes Dammen, who started the center in the middle of the corona pandemic, and who is now looking forward to more activity again.
